What is your first Funko Pop! or collectible that you bought, and where do you keep it?

The first Funko Pop! I ever purchased was from BBC’s Sherlock. While he doesn’t live in his infamous flat on Baker Street, Pop! Sherlock with Violin does take up permanent residence on my fireplace mantel. This super sleuth does his best thinking out of the box and can often be found among stacks of my favorite detective stories. With violin in hand, Pop! Sherlock inspires a cozy atmosphere perfect for curling up with a good book.

Is there a special story or memory behind your first Funko?

The Sherlock TV show was my first real introduction to fandom, but I mostly participated in the fandom on my own through memes and internet culture. When I visited the Funko HQ store for the first time and saw my favorite characters on display, I was so excited! I remember thinking, “Wow, other people like this show too!” There wasn’t much “official” Sherlock merch available at the time, so it was really cool to pick up my favorite characters and hold them in my hands. I also grew up in the same town as Funko HQ, so it felt like there was an extra personal touch to collecting the characters that I loved.

How does this Pop! inspire your work?

Looking back, it’s funny to think about how Pop! Sherlock kicked off my real-world fandom journey. After my first purchase, I began collecting lots of other Funko Pops! to help bring my nerdy interests to life. Now I’m a writer at Funko, and I get to write about my favorite fandoms every day with other people who are just as geeky as I am! Keeping Pop! Sherlock on display recalls my first forays into fandom life and reminds me that life can come full circle in the best of ways.
